Best Bang For The Buck GPU August 2013 Extreme

Now its time for the extreme cards. This list will go all the way up to $1000.

1. GTX 780 3GB(Around $650)

Alright where to start! Okay Nvidia GTX 780. Younger brother of the mighty GTX Titan. They are built on the same GK110 28nm fabrication. They have same transistor count & a massive 7.1Billion. 
It has 2304 CUDA Cores, 192 Texture Unit, 48 Raster Operators, Core is clocked at 863MHz with a boost clock of 900MHz. It has 384bit 6GHz GDDR5 3GB memory that has a bandwidth of about 288.4GB/s.

It supports advanced technologies like GPU Boost 2.0, 3D Vision, CUDA, DirectX 11 Shader Model 5.0 OpenGL , PhysX, TXAA, Adaptive   VSync, FXAA, 3D Vision Surround,SLI etc.

It is a bit more power hungry for a single GPU. It burns around 250W under load. So you will be needing a 600W PSU to run this. And ofcourse single 6 pin & a single 8 ping power connector is needed too. Make sure your power supply has that one. A Thermaltake Smart 630SE should be enough. 

2. AMD HD 7990 6GB

HD 7990 is actually a dual GPU card. That means it has two GPUs on its PCB(Printed Circuit Board). In this case both of them are HD 7970 the most powerful single GPU from AMD. 

So most of its spec will be just double of what we saw in the HD 7970. HD 7970 itself is a monster when it comes to playing high end games with very good frame rate. This card will perform even better than that. 

This AMD HD 7990 is ofcourse built on the same 28nm GCN Tahiti GPU. Just it has got 8.6Billion Transistors, 4096 Stream Unit, 8.2TFLOPs computing power. This is a powerhouse. It is a monster AMD has unleashed! It has 6GB GDDR5 memory with a bandwidth of around 576GB/s!

It supports all the latest technologies and can run any game with good frames at the fullest settings. Make sure you have a decent system to cope with this monster. 

This card requires minimum 750W power supply. It needs to 8 pin PCI e power connectors. Make sure you have a good power supply for this. 

Presenting you the AMD HD 7990. It has triple cooling fan with aluminum fins for cooling the GPUs & Copper Fins for cooling the GPU VRM. Two 8 pin power connectors are visible. Also Crossfire Finger & Bios button is visible. This card is indeed a large card. You will need a large Case for this.

Damn this card is beautiful.



The word TITAN was from the Titan Supercomputer Located in the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. It's because both of them are built on the same thing GK110. The Titan GPU is built on the same GK110 with  2688 CUDA cores same as the Tesla K20X used in the Titan supercomputer.

Titan GPU has 14SMX unit. It is faster than a GTX 780 though it has lower clocks. Base 837MHz Boost 876MHz. It has 6GB GDDR5 Memory. 

It requires 250W power.

4. Nvidia GTX 690

Like the 7990 this card is also a dual GPU card. This card is built on the GK104 Kepler architecture. 
This is actually dual 680. So all the options will be same as the 680. Only will perform faster. It actually performs faster than a Titan. But Titan is not a dual GPU card. 

This card is kind of overkill because dual 770 in SLI configuration would be a better choice I guess.

It requires 300W power, make sure you have adequate power to power this thing up.

Best Bang For The Buck GPU High End

1. AMD HD 7970 3GB

This is a very powerful product from AMD. For running games at absolutely maxed out with full HD resolution this card can be the best choice. It won't cost much but its performance is awesome.

This card is built on a 28nm process. It's codename is Tahiti. This is a GCN card. By default it has a core clock of 925MHz, it has 2048 Stream unit. It has high speed GDDR5 memory interface, 384bit 240GB/s 3GB memory. It is fully DirectX11 Shader model 5.0 & OpenGL 4.2 supported.

If you have a full HD display & a system based on an AMD FX 8 core processor or an core i5 or i7 processor & you want to play latest released games at very high graphics this card can be the best choice for you.

This card consumes around 264W. Two 6 pin power connector is needed. For the powering this up I will recommend atleast a 550W decent power supply. Like a cooler master GX 550.

2. Nvidia GTX 770

Actually 770 is a bit more advanced 680. It is built on the same GK104 Kepler 28nm process. It features 1536CUDA unit same as the GTX 680. Though it features higher clocks. It has 1046MHz base clock & 1085MHz boost clock.

It has 2GB/4GB GDDR5 256 bit memory with an effective 7 Gbps speed & 224.3GB/s bandwidth.

This card is good enough for playing all the games at absolutely high or very high settings.

Though when it comes to the flagship games like Crysis 3 you may need to lower down a few options to get very high frame per second.

This card has a TDP of 230W. So you will be needing a minimum of 500W/550W continuous power supply unit.

GPU List Superior Mainstream Gaming August 2013

These cards perform faster than mid level cards but not that high performance. This cards can be used to find harmony between price and performance. This cards do not burn much energy so you wouldn't be worrying about your electric bill either.

1. The first one is the GTX 660.

This card is built on a Kepler GK106 28nm GPU. This GK106 is fully unlocked.  It features 960 CUDA cores, 980MHz Base clock with 1006MHz boost clock(overclocked edition has higher clocks), 2GB 192bit GDDR5 144.2GB/s of framebuffer, PCI express 3.0, 4K2k display & all the nvidia technologies. It is fully supports DirectX11 Shader Model 5.0 OpenGL4.2. It supports 4 way multi monitor setup. Supports 2 way SLI. For output

This card has a TDP of around 140W(Overclocked Cards may have higher TDP). So a bit more decent power supply unit is needed. Recommended Power supply unit for this card is 450W. It is fed by a single 6 pin PCI e power connector.

2. AMD HD 7870 (around $190)

This card has a bit higher performance than the GTX 660. It's higher memory bandwidth(153.6GB/s) lets user run games at higher resolution. It is built on a 28nm Pitcairn processor. It has a 4.8GHz/6GHz 256bit width memory interface, 2GB framebuffer. It is fully DirectX 11 capable, Shader Model 5.0 & OpenGL 4.2 capable. It has 1536Stream Processors.

This card is good enough for running most games at full HD resolution with very high details.

This card consumes a bit higher, 175W TDP. 500W Power supply unit is recommended for this GPU.

3. GTX 760 (Around $250)

This is the nvidia's latest architectural beauty. It is also built on the Kepler architecture, GK104, 28nm process. It has 1152 CUDA cores, 980MHz base clock & a 1033MHz Boost clock. It has 6Gbps GDDR5 Memory of 2GB, with a bandwidth of 192.2GB/s.

One major difference between 6 series & 7 series is, 7 series features GPU boost 2.0.

This card has enough muscle to run most of the high end games at high frame rate. It has a 170W TDP & requires dual 6 pin PCI e power connector. So you will be needing a PSU that can provide this much power.

An Asus 760 card. This card looks mighty.

4. The next one is AMD 7950 (around $220)

The 79XX series is the AMD's high end series. It is also built on a GCN Tahiti 28nm process. With 1792 Stream Processors, 32 Raster Operator. It's core is clocked at 850MHz. It has 3GB of GDDR5 384 bit memory with a massive 240GB/s bandwidth.

This card fully supports DirectX11 Shader Model 5.0 & OpenGL4.2.

This card consumes a bit more power. Its a 200W TDP card & two 6 pin power connector is needed, so a branded 500W PSU is a must for running this card.

GPU List August 2013 Mid

For Mid Range Budget Like $100 to $ 180 the first card that came into my mind is the AMD HD7790 & Nvidia GTX650Ti.

So first of all HD 7790 (around $ 130)

As there was a big price & performance gap between 7770 & 7850 AMD launched the 7790. It is also a GPU built on the 28nm process. It's core is clocked at around 1GHz(Higher for overclocked editions) , 896 Stream Processors, 1GB/2GB GDDR5 memory.

It's power consumption is also low, only around 85W TDP. It requires a 6 pin PCI e power connector. Most low end branded power supply units will be able to run this card pretty smoothly.

This card has DVI, HDMI, Display Port. It fully supports DirectX11, OpenGL 4.2 & Shader Model 5.0. Even in most demanding games it manages good frame per second in moderate resolution or in High Resolution just lowering down the high end options a bit. Like turning off Anti Aliasing.

Second one the Nvidia GTX 650Ti

Like Nvidia told about this card "GTX gaming at a remarkable price" this card is a very good choice for building up a system with around $170 GPU. Its a GK 106 card with a few features disabled.

It is built on a 28nm procedure with the Kepler Architecture.

GTX 650ti is clocked around 928MHz(Higher for overclocked GPUs), it has 5400MHz GDDR5 Memory interface, 768CUDA units, it has 4k2k display support(24Hz).

It is packed with all the nvidia technologies like PhysX, CUDA, 3D vision, Nvidia Surround etc. It also uses a single PCI e power connector for meeting up it's 110W TDP(Overclocked 650ti will have higher TDP).

On the Top Asus 650Ti & Bottom Gigabyte 650Ti.

The next one on the Mid range list is the AMD HD 7850. 

When it was launched it has a higher price point. But to compete with Nvidia, AMD lowered its price to around $ 170.

Like other 7XXX cards it is also built on a 28nm fabrication procedure. It is a Pitcairn card. This days many games are optimized for AMD that could be a good reason for buying these GPUs if you plan on playing those games. AMD also offers bundled game with 7XXX series GPU that could also be one of the reasons to buy these cards.

Anyway this card runs around 860MHz default clock. Its memory is clocked at 4800MHz effective. It has 1GB/2GB GDDR5 memory interface. It has fully support for DirectX11, Shader Model 5.0 & OpenGL4.2. Like other 7XXX it supports AMD HD3D & 4K2K resolution for maximizing your entertainment.

It's TDP is around 130W. Single 6 pin PCI e connector is enough for this card. But you will be needing a bit better power supply unit to provide 130W more on its 12V rail.

This card can run all the top level games with good frames.

Sapphire HD 7850 Dual X 2GB.

The 7790 & 650Ti has almost similar performance. 7850 beats both of them.

Best Bang For The Buck GPU List(Entry) August 2013

Welcome everyone. My awesome laziness didn't let me write for quite a few weeks. Anyway here I am again writing about different Graphics Card and how much they cost. So lets take a look.

Entry Level Graphics Card

1. AMD HD 6670 (Below $100)

This cards cost lower & consume low power. I wanted to suggest AMD HD 5670 but unfortunately that card is discontinued now. From my personal experience a 5670 is a very good gaming GPU for a system with a Low Resolution Display. This card is good enough for running high end games like Call of Duty Black ops 2, Crysis 2, Crysis 3, Metro Last Night etc. with pretty playable frame rate at low resolution. Successor of this GPU is AMD HD 6670. HD 6670 features a bit better performance.
It features 800MHz processor, 128bit GDDR5/GDDR3 512MB/1GB/2GB memory, 480 Stream Processors, DVI , HDMI , Displayport, DirectX11, OpenGL 4.1, Shader Model 5.0. It is built on a 40nm process. My opinion? It's the best card under 75W. It does not require any supplementary PCI e power. 

This AMD HD 6670 card is obviously the best choice for lower end system as it does not require that much money or power. It has all the features of high end cards only not that powerful. But still it is best choice for low end system build.

2. AMD HD 7770 (Around $100)

This is the most affordable GCN cards. This card features a 28nm fabrication process so it burns less energy & produce less heat but its performance is pretty remarkable. It has a core clock of 1GHz, 640 Stream Processors, 128bit GDDR5 Memory, HDMI, Displayport, DVI, DirectX11 , OpenGL 4.2 support. This card is good enough for playing all the high end games at moderate resolution with moderate frame rate. It only needs one 6 pin PCI e power connector & it has a TDP of 80W only. Any normal PSU this days will be able to handle this card. With a budget around $100, this card is the best choice.

Sapphire AMD HD 7770 GHz Edition.

Sapphire VaporX HD 7770. Looks good but overkill I would say, You don't need dual fan to cool down 80W Thermal.

XFX HD 7770 with GHOST THERMAL TECHNOLOGY. Marketing gimmick I believe, branding their products with appealing names.

HIS IceQX HD 7770. Outer look is pretty innovative.

Now, Lets take a look at the benchmark. As both of these cards are pretty low end, I'm gonna run all the games in 1680*1050,rather than running in 1920*1080.  Fraps  was used to check the frame rate.

The following games were benchmarked. 

According to the benchmark it's clearly seen that HD 7770 performs very good in every games. For particular games, it will still be playable in 1920*1080. Whereas HD 6670 doesn't perform that good but still this card is best according to its price point. Anyone who can only buy 6670, I will recommend lower a few settings & you will get playable frame rate.
